On February 1st 2025, educators and thought leaders gathered for the BeCome workshop in our school; a transformative event that focused on redesigning schools to enhance character education and leadership. Attended by 107 participants from various schools and colleges, the workshop sparked essential conversations about the future of education.

Renowned speaker Juan Pablo Dabdoub led the discussions, echoing the sentiments of Paul Houston, former Executive Director of the American Association for School Administrators, who stated, “Schools are perfectly designed for the results we are getting. If we don’t like the results, we need to redesign schools.” This provocative message set the tone for a day dedicated to exploring how education can evolve to serve the holistic development of students and the broader community.

The workshop provided a rich foundation, drawing from decades of research in essential fields such as school climate, character education and social-emotional learning. Participants engaged in dynamic discussions about re-imagining everyday school elements—like assessments, discipline and relationships—to create environments that nurture not only academic success but also character development and positive youth outcomes.

As educators returned to their schools, they left invigorated and equipped with fresh insights on how to foster environments that prioritize character education. The BeCome workshop was not just an event; it was a meaningful step toward redefining the future of education in Kenya, with a clear focus on nurturing tomorrow’s leaders.

On February 1st, 2025, a group of 49 students from Form 4 embarked on a meaningful journey to the Kabete Boys Rehabilitation Center. This facility plays a crucial role in transforming the lives of juveniles who have found themselves on the wrong side of the law, providing them with a second chance through rehabilitation and vocational training.

Upon arrival, the students were warmly welcomed by the center, which currently houses 23 boys. The visit was a beautiful blend of service and mentor-ship. The Form 4 boys rolled up their sleeves to assist with various tasks, including splitting kuni (firewood), slashing the grounds and cleaning the rooms. They also took part in afternoon sports, engaging the young residents in lively football matches that fostered camaraderie and joy.

The students, guided by our staff members: Mr. Maluku, Mr. Kiliru, Mr. Muhia, Mr. Salim and Mr. Mureithi were eager to lend their support and uplift the spirits of the boys at the center. They brought along thoughtful donations, including unga, tissues, soap, detergents, cereals and clothes—essentials that would greatly benefit the rehabilitation efforts.

The day was filled with learning, leaving a lasting impact on both the visitors and the residents of Center. As they departed at 4:10 PM, the students carried with them not only the joy of giving but also the hope of positive change and the spirit of community and compassion. This visit was a reminder of the difference that kindness can make in the lives of young individuals seeking a brighter future.

On the morning of 21st January 2025, the 11:50 AM Mass at Strathmore School was a moment of gratitude and celebration. The Chaplain led the mass in offering thanks to God for the remarkable results achieved by the Form 4 class of 2024. A good number of the students, along with their parents, gathered to express their appreciation for the hard work and success that marked their journey.

Following the mass, the parents graciously presented three delicious cakes, which were shared among the teachers, assistant teachers, and auxiliary staff. Each staff member had the chance to enjoy a slice of the thanksgiving cake, symbolizing the shared joy and appreciation for everyone’s role in the students’ achievements.

The atmosphere was filled with warmth as parents, students, and teachers took time to reminisce about the years spent together, sharing stories and laughter. It was a moment to reflect on all the growth, challenges, and successes that the class of 2024 had experienced, and to give thanks for the blessings they’ve received.

We wish the Form 4 2024 class continued success in all their future endeavors. May they continue to shine brightly in all they pursue!

On October 12, 2024, we held a Career Day specifically designed for Form 3 students and their parents. The primary objective of this event was to equip the Form 3s with essential information regarding university applications, diverse career choices and strategies for success at the university level.

The thoughtfully curated agenda featured various speakers who addressed critical topics such as university funding, the overall university experience, potential successes and challenges students may encounter and informed career choices. By sharing their insights and experiences, these speakers highlighted the importance of informed decision-making in shaping one’s educational and career journey.

The event showcased a total of 25 institutions, predominantly universities and colleges, each of which had dedicated stands. Here, representatives provided detailed explanations of the various courses offered, helping students to better understand the academic pathways available to them.

For many students, this Career Day was an invaluable opportunity as they prepare for their final year of high school and contemplate their transition to university. It inspired them to explore their options, ask questions and envision their future academic and professional endeavors. By fostering this kind of awareness and discourse, we aim to empower the next generation of leaders to make informed choices that will set the foundation for their success.

This year has been nothing short of remarkable, as we’ve witnessed a vibrant wave of enthusiasm in our parenting workshops! Parents from every class have been taking their Saturdays to dive into these enriching sessions, dedicating their time and energy to deepen their parenting skills. It’s been truly heartwarming to see such a passionate commitment to personal and collective growth among our parents.

Our workshops are more than just classes; they’re a treasure trove of invaluable insights and practical advice, lighting the way through the rewarding journey of parenthood. The enthusiastic participation of our parents has infused each gathering with a lively spirit, transforming them into delightful experiences brimming with shared stories, laughter and collective wisdom.

This year, we are particularly excited about our new initiative: the Mawio Parenting Seminars! These seminars have proven to be incredibly enlightening for parents of the boys enrolled in the newly launched Mawio Project. This initiative aims to strengthen our ties with public schools in the Westlands District, providing them with the same educational exposure that our students enjoy. It’s a heartwarming reach-out effort that underlines our commitment to enhancing education for all.

We are overjoyed to hear overwhelmingly positive feedback from the parents involved in the Mawio Project. They are not only gaining valuable insights from the seminars that have been thoughtfully tailored for them, but they are also forging strong connections, sharing experiences and building supportive connections.

We warmly welcome all Mawio parents into our school family! Your involvement adds immense value to our school and we encourage our ongoing parents to keep the momentum going by attending these fantastic workshops. Let’s continue to nurture the spirit of learning as we work hand in hand to pave the way for the next generation!

Together, we are crafting a brighter future for our children. Thank you for being such an essential part of this incredible journey!

This year’s prize-giving day was nothing short of a delightful celebration!

We were thrilled to welcome our Special Guests, the Mwagona and Kiai families. Mr. Mwagona, a cherished alumnus and proud grandparent, beamed with pride as he watched his grandson graduate from the Form 4 class of 2024. And the joy didn’t stop there! Mr. Kiai, a former student who now serves as a dedicated teacher and Dean of Studies, had the honor of celebrating his own son’s graduation from the same class. It was a heartwarming sight to see the generations come together!

The event turned into a beautiful reunion, as Mr. Mwagona caught up with former colleagues and students, reminiscing about the good old days at the school. Meanwhile, Mr. Kiai joyfully shared tales from his own school days, creating an atmosphere of nostalgia and laughter that filled the air with happiness.

We also celebrated our outstanding achievers, such as Besel Onyango, who proudly took home the Sportsman of the Year award and Kyle Angwenyi, our brilliant Scholar of the Year for 2023. Their accomplishments lit up the stage and inspired us all!

In addition to recognizing athletic prowess and academic excellence, we acknowledged remarkable students who have excelled in various fields outside the classroom, as well as devoted staff members who have dedicated their time and hearts to our school for many years.

As the day drew to a close, families and friends gathered together, sharing laughter and heartfelt conversations. It was truly a joyful afternoon — a wonderful get-together. Here’s to many more moments of celebration and unity!

On September 14th, 2024, we launched the inaugural Mawio Parenting Seminar, a gathering where minds converged around the crucial theme of “Educating in Character”. This enriching seminar is designed to give parents ideas they need to nurture well-rounded individuals and is divided into three engaging sessions, inviting parents to share their insights and experiences. We are excited to announce that the next two sessions will follow on September 28th and October 5th, 2024!

During our first session, parents received individual report forms detailing their sons’ academic performances in the program thus far, sparking enlightening discussions. The feedback poured in and it was heartwarming to hear parents express their observations of positive transformations in their children. They noted remarkable improvements in areas such as Academic Performance, Confidence, English Speaking, Order, Hygiene and Self-Esteem. This witnessing in growth fills us with hope and inspiration.

This gathering marks the beginning of a collaborative program, a beautiful partnership between the school and the families, working hand in hand to raise resilient, capable and confident young men. As we look forward to the upcoming sessions, we collectively embrace the opportunity to learn and grow together!

On August 10, 2024, the Mwilu Family organized a successful charity football tournament to support needy students at our school. With strong backing from parents, who not only contributed financially but also attended in large numbers, the event was a fantastic effort.

17 teams, mostly comprised of students, participated in the 7-a-side tournament, with each player contributing Ksh. 1,000. Tournament T-shirts were also sold to raise additional funds. Thanks to the excellent organization and the dedication of parents, an impressive Ksh. 334,000 was raised to help students in need. Thank you to everyone who made this initiative a great success!

Launched on 8th June 2024; Mawio is dedicated to empowering students from greatly challenging backgrounds from our sub-county, Westlands by providing them with the necessary tools and guidance to enhance their educational journey. This incredible weekend program is designed specifically to improve the academic performance of junior school students and create a supportive community for their families.

Every Saturday, we welcome the boys to Strathmore School, from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. During their time with us, we focus on teaching them vital subjects such as Mathematics, Science, English, Kiswahili and Social Studies, equipping them with comprehensive foundations.

In collaboration with five public junior schools in Kibera, Kawangware, and Kangemi, Mawio actively supports 40 grade 6 students. These schools face resource constraints, making our partnership crucial in ensuring these students have the resources they need to thrive. Additionally, our program goes beyond academics, nurturing character development and life skills through engaging activities, sports and enriching excursions.

Our commitment to these boys extends beyond their current academic year. Mawio is dedicated to supporting them until they transition to grade 10, nurturing them throughout their crucial years of education.

We are hopeful that this impactful journey will empower these young boys!
