Grade 3
The year 2021 started off well with learners undergoing a KNEC assessment. The Integrated Learning Areas of assessment for grade 3 saw learners display their skill in making water safe for drinking. Learners collected resources (pictures and videos) on water sources, they prepared 3D models for water in the locality, they did practicals on washing hands and re-use of water. The learners showed the process of filtering, boiling, cooling and storing water for drinking.

Grade 4
The grade 4 have just completed their KNEC assessment which has seen them showcase the skills learned in class.

In Agriculture the task number 5 had them make a simple drip irrigation system using locally available materials.

In home science they showcased their ability to apply shoe polish and take care of their shoes.

CBC is a competency Based Curriculum that was rolled out to replace the 8.4.4 system of education.

Competency-based learning refers to systems of instruction, assessment, grading, and academic reporting that are based on students demonstrating that they have learned the knowledge and skills they are expected to learn as they progress through their education.

(Simon Priest, 2014)

Competency-based learning is generally seen as an alternative to the current educational approach in which learners may not acquire proficiency in a course or academic subject not unless they earn course credit, get promoted to the next grade level or graduate.

CBC is focused more on competencies, it’s flexible with an opportunity for specialisation, balanced, formative and summative assessment and excellence, it emphasises on education and learning

Grade 1, 2, 3, 4

The grade 1, 2, 3 & 4 learners have been introduced to new terms and ways of learning.

We now talk about learning areas, strands and sub-strands, outcomes and expectations among the key words.

This has made them appreciate the change of times for a 21st century learner.

Digital literacy is now key as learners are introduced to digital devices.

Learning is to the learners. Pupils interact with learning materials with the teacher being a facilitator. The learning areas now are:

  1. Literacy Activities
  2. Kiswahili Language Activities/Kenya Sign Language
  3. English Language Activities
  4. Mathematics Activities
  5. Environmental Activities
  6. Hygiene and Nutrition Activities
  7. Religious Activities
  8. Movement and Creative Activities

(Art & Craft, Music and Movement Activities)

  1. Pastoral Programme of Instruction

In addition grade 4 have the following learning areas:

  1. Social studies
  2. Science and Technology
  3. Home Science
  4. Agriculture
  5. Environment
  6. Creative Arts (Art, craft and Music)
  7. Physical and Health Education

All this enable learners acquire competences to make them be part of problem solving in their immediate environment. Learning is now integral to class, home and community at large.

The inquiry based learning follows a three step process: what do I know, what do I want and what have I learned about the strands. This leads to the acquisition of competencies.

For Strathmore school, the Grade 4 early last year picked up the system that culminated into ‘cleaning the market project’

This year has seen them acquire many skills among them; skills of the online classes with self-manipulation of the digital devices. This has really enhanced digital literacy.

Other competencies have been through sports, washing utensils, using improvised materials, making water safe for drinking, preparing the land for planting, preparing manure, sewing, shoe polishing, cooking just to name a few.

March 12th 2020 saw Strathmore School participate in the first round of Kenya Annual Mathematical Olympiad competition for the first time in the history of the school. The aim of this competition was to select Kenya’s team for the International Olympiad. The international Mathematics Olympiad is a Mathematical Olympiad for pre-university students, and is the oldest of the International Science Olympiads.

In the first round 20 Strathmore Math enthusiasts participated; 8 Form twos (junior), 4 Form threes (Senior) and 8 Form fours (Senior). The type of questions set in the first round were testing a lot of analytical skills. They provided an appreciable challenge and provoked thought and spirit of wonder. The first round picked the top 100 and top 200 in the junior and senior categories respectively. In the junior category two of our students: Robert Otieno and Mwangi Kimani secured slots in the top 20. In the senior category nine of our students qualified for the second round. They included: Allan Muruha (form3), Adrian Adambo (form 4), Jeremy Michoma (form4), Philip Miroga (form 4), Alvin Nyandeje (form 4), Ryan Chironga (form 4), Roman Njoroge (form 4), Victor Musila (form 4) and Mathew Mwangi (form 3).

The second round was held on 18th February 2021. The top 6 students in the country are to represent Kenya for the world stage. One of our boys, Jeremy Michoma emerged 5th best in an exam which demanded application that is different from the memorized concepts and routine techniques in the standard curriculum. He is to represent Kenya in Washington USA but due to Covid restrictions, it can only be held virtually sometimes this year. Congratulations to Jeremy.

Jeremy Michoma
5th Place

We also appreciate the exemplary performance of Allan Muruha position 22, Adrian Adambo position 49, Ryan Chironga position 49, Alvin Nyandeje position 73 and Philip Miroga position 77. In a special way we recognize Robert Otieno, a form 2 who sat the same paper with the seniors and managed position 100.

Mr. Michael Robert Lyford-Pike Peirano, a long-serving teacher at Strathmore School, peacefully departed this life into God’s presence on Monday, 23rd November 2020 at the Nairobi Hospital after a short illness.

On 31st January, the school Chaplain Fr. Francis Rimbau celebrated a thanksgiving mass at the courtyard in between the library and the form 4 class. This was to give thanks for the results of last years KCPE and KCSE national examinations. Parents from both the Form 4 and Standard 8 class of 2019 showed gratitude by presenting tokens of appreciation to teachers and auxiliary staff.

As part of the thanksgiving mass we also hosted our alumni class of 1989. The class was the first Form 4 class to have graduated as a Form 4 class with the 8-4-4 curriculum. The alumni class gave a cheque of ksh 500,000 to start off an endowment fund dubbed 1989(8-4-4 class) Endowment fund. The alumni had lunch in the school’s dinning hall and interacted with the current students.

The Form 4 class of 1989(8-4-4) had a reunion afternoon that coincided with the thanksgiving mass for the results of Form 4 and Standard 8 class of 2019. They had lunch and chats with the current students. They started an endowment fund (1989.8-4-4 class) with a cheque of ksh 500,000 presented to the principal.
