On February 1st 2025, educators and thought leaders gathered for the BeCome workshop in our school; a transformative event that focused on redesigning schools to enhance character education and leadership. Attended by 107 participants from various schools and colleges, the workshop sparked essential conversations about the future of education.

Renowned speaker Juan Pablo Dabdoub led the discussions, echoing the sentiments of Paul Houston, former Executive Director of the American Association for School Administrators, who stated, “Schools are perfectly designed for the results we are getting. If we don’t like the results, we need to redesign schools.” This provocative message set the tone for a day dedicated to exploring how education can evolve to serve the holistic development of students and the broader community.

The workshop provided a rich foundation, drawing from decades of research in essential fields such as school climate, character education and social-emotional learning. Participants engaged in dynamic discussions about re-imagining everyday school elements—like assessments, discipline and relationships—to create environments that nurture not only academic success but also character development and positive youth outcomes.

As educators returned to their schools, they left invigorated and equipped with fresh insights on how to foster environments that prioritize character education. The BeCome workshop was not just an event; it was a meaningful step toward redefining the future of education in Kenya, with a clear focus on nurturing tomorrow’s leaders.

On February 1st, 2025, a group of 49 students from Form 4 embarked on a meaningful journey to the Kabete Boys Rehabilitation Center. This facility plays a crucial role in transforming the lives of juveniles who have found themselves on the wrong side of the law, providing them with a second chance through rehabilitation and vocational training.

Upon arrival, the students were warmly welcomed by the center, which currently houses 23 boys. The visit was a beautiful blend of service and mentor-ship. The Form 4 boys rolled up their sleeves to assist with various tasks, including splitting kuni (firewood), slashing the grounds and cleaning the rooms. They also took part in afternoon sports, engaging the young residents in lively football matches that fostered camaraderie and joy.

The students, guided by our staff members: Mr. Maluku, Mr. Kiliru, Mr. Muhia, Mr. Salim and Mr. Mureithi were eager to lend their support and uplift the spirits of the boys at the center. They brought along thoughtful donations, including unga, tissues, soap, detergents, cereals and clothes—essentials that would greatly benefit the rehabilitation efforts.

The day was filled with learning, leaving a lasting impact on both the visitors and the residents of Center. As they departed at 4:10 PM, the students carried with them not only the joy of giving but also the hope of positive change and the spirit of community and compassion. This visit was a reminder of the difference that kindness can make in the lives of young individuals seeking a brighter future.

The past weeks have been an exciting one for the Strathmore School junior swimmers who participated in 2 major competitions. On January 31st, 2025, 10 students from our Junior High participated in individual events at Oshwal Academy Junior High in Westlands, bringing home an impressive haul of medals.

The team dominated the competition, securing 1st place in 4 events, 2nd place in 4 events, and 3rd place in 4 events. Their outstanding performance earned them the title of Best Boys Team out of 4 participating schools.

Just a day later, on February 1st, 2025, the team’s momentum continued, a larger contingent of 33 swimmers represented in the Fitknonnet Gala held at Kiota School. They had impressive results across various age groups.

The team excelled, taking 1st place in 3 age groups: 6-7, 12-13, and 14-15 years. They also secured 2nd place in 4 age groups: 8-9, 10-11, 12-13, and 14-15 years and 3rd place in 3 age groups: 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13 years.

Their overall performance was rewarded with the Best Boys Team title, as well as 1st runners-up overall.
Congratulations to the talented young swimmers on their impressive achievements!

At the start of the school term, the school Chaplain, Fr. Francis, blessed the new Activities Block, opening the doors of each room and blessing each room for the students who will use the facility.

Since then, the Activities Block has become a vibrant hub of activity, hosting various clubs such as Chess, Coding, Music and Art, among others. The new facility is open to all sections of the school, both Primary and Secondary, providing a dynamic space for students to explore their interests and talents.

We are excited to make the most of this wonderful new resource and look forward to seeing the many ways our students will engage with the diverse activities it offers.

On the morning of 21st January 2025, the 11:50 AM Mass at Strathmore School was a moment of gratitude and celebration. The Chaplain led the mass in offering thanks to God for the remarkable results achieved by the Form 4 class of 2024. A good number of the students, along with their parents, gathered to express their appreciation for the hard work and success that marked their journey.

Following the mass, the parents graciously presented three delicious cakes, which were shared among the teachers, assistant teachers, and auxiliary staff. Each staff member had the chance to enjoy a slice of the thanksgiving cake, symbolizing the shared joy and appreciation for everyone’s role in the students’ achievements.

The atmosphere was filled with warmth as parents, students, and teachers took time to reminisce about the years spent together, sharing stories and laughter. It was a moment to reflect on all the growth, challenges, and successes that the class of 2024 had experienced, and to give thanks for the blessings they’ve received.

We wish the Form 4 2024 class continued success in all their future endeavors. May they continue to shine brightly in all they pursue!

As part of its education curriculum; Strathmore School emphaises on having compulsory sports lessons across all classes in school. Day 1 sports lessons for our new pupils and students in Grades 1 and Grade 7 was full of energy and excitement; a chance to have a first exciting introductory sports lesson in school.

The Grade 1 boys were in for a treat as they were handed a soccer ball and given free rein to play and explore. From the moment the ball hit the ground, the playground came alive with eager feet chasing the ball. It was a fun-filled introduction to sports that had the stage set for more structured lessons as the term progresses.

The Grade 7 boys had a different but equally exciting challenge. Their afternoon was packed with physical fitness exercises designed to build strength, agility and endurance. From warm-ups to fitness drills, they pushed themselves to get in shape for the competitive team sports that lie ahead. There was no shortage of energy as the boys worked through every move.

The first day may have been just a taste of what’s to come, but it’s clear that these students are ready for more. With a focus on developing well-rounded athletes, we can’t wait to these young sportsmen grow.

Three cheers to the future stars of Strathmore School!

As we begin the 2025 Academic Year, we give thanks to God for the excellent 2024 KCSE results. The class posted a
mean score of 10.087, a slight improvement from the 10.080 posted in 2023. The class registered an impressive
performance in Computer Studies (12.00); French (11.29); Kiswahili (10.74); English (10.52); Mathematics (10.51)
and Biology (10.33). In addition, 20 boys scored an average Grade of A plain, one of the highest numbers in recent
times!
We commend all those who made these results possible beginning with the candidates themselves. They faced great
challenges including numerous school interruptions due to floods and civil protests as they prepared for these
examinations. Their resilience, discipline and sense of focus kept them going; it has paid off in the end!
To the candidates’ parents: we are very grateful to you for standing by your sons and for the guidance, commitment
and the sacrifices you made for them. Your support for the last four years, and in some cases 12, has been
phenomenal! Educating a child in a day school in Nairobi is no mean feat; it calls for rare commitment from the
parents, you have proved equal to the task!
To all members of staff, teaching and non-teaching: Your commitment to duty, love for the boys and generous self-
giving have translated to the results that we celebrate today. You encouraged the boys when their hope faltered;
you challenged them to aim higher when they slackened and offered them great company; God has rewarded your
efforts!
To the Class of 2024: As you step out into the world, remember that you go armed with more than good grades; you
go armed with a formed conscience and great core values of excellence, integrity, freedom, responsibility and
service. May these values guide you as you seek your paths in service of God and humanity!

A PLAIN STUDENTS

Mr. Geoffery Ngugi Kiruri, Strathmore’s longest serving librarian passed away on Wednesday, 16th October 2024 after a short illness. He will be laid to rest on Thursday, 24th October 2024 in his home in Muthiga Village, Kinoo, Kiambu County. The funeral service will be held at Gitumbi PCEA Church Kinoo, from 10:0am.

Mr. Ngugi’s journey at Strathmore started right at the beginning of the institution; indeed, he is one of the few people who literally participated in its building, brick, by brick. When construction work at Strathmore School (then Strathmore College) began, many young men at the time sought employment at the construction site. Many came and went but Mr. Ngugi’s diligence and industry caught the eye of the school administrators and they decided to keep him, and for a long time.

Formally joining the school in 1967, Mr. Ngugi worked in various capacities, culminating in his being appointed School Librarian, the last station he worked in at the school. Despite not having any formal training as a librarian, Mr. Ngugi self-trained and became one of the most effective librarians the school has ever had! Every time I went to him for a book, he would get it for me in record time, sometimes without even consulting the catalogue!

Many of us who interacted with Mr. Ngugi cherish memories of a gentle, almost bashful man whose welcoming smile was as gentle as it was genuine. A perfect peaceful man and true peacemaker, Mr. Ngugi did his work so diligently, yet so discreetly that he never drew attention to himself. Even when sometimes the students would be a little rowdy and deliberately did things to annoy him, Mr. Ngugi would correct them with such gentleness and with his signature smile. With time, they gave up trying to annoy him. They realized it was impossible to get him worked up!

Mr. Ngugi retired from employment in 2001 more from his own persistence than from necessity. Having rendered distinguished service to the school for over 34 years, he felt that time had come to let a younger person take his mantle. Finding a replacement for him was not easy. Men such as Mr. Ngugi do not come easy!

As we bid farewell to this great man, we can only give praise to God for creating such a great soul and loving us so much as to choose us to share his life with us.

On October 12, 2024, we held a Career Day specifically designed for Form 3 students and their parents. The primary objective of this event was to equip the Form 3s with essential information regarding university applications, diverse career choices and strategies for success at the university level.

The thoughtfully curated agenda featured various speakers who addressed critical topics such as university funding, the overall university experience, potential successes and challenges students may encounter and informed career choices. By sharing their insights and experiences, these speakers highlighted the importance of informed decision-making in shaping one’s educational and career journey.

The event showcased a total of 25 institutions, predominantly universities and colleges, each of which had dedicated stands. Here, representatives provided detailed explanations of the various courses offered, helping students to better understand the academic pathways available to them.

For many students, this Career Day was an invaluable opportunity as they prepare for their final year of high school and contemplate their transition to university. It inspired them to explore their options, ask questions and envision their future academic and professional endeavors. By fostering this kind of awareness and discourse, we aim to empower the next generation of leaders to make informed choices that will set the foundation for their success.

On 5th and 10th October 2024 we had the Chaplain organise for reception of the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation for 38 boys drawn from Grade7, Grade 8, Form 1 and Form 3. The Sacraments were administered at the Saint Austins Parish.

The reception of the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation is a profound journey within the Catholic faith, marking the initiation and deepening of one’s relationship with Christ and the Church.

Baptism is foundational, as it establishes the basis for the entire Christian life, allowing the faithful to share in the divine nature through the grace of Christ.

Confirmation is crucial for completing the grace of Baptism, empowering individuals to live out their faith actively and courageously.

Through these sacred rites, the faithful are called to embrace their identity as children of God and to bear witness to His love in the world!
